que será será

we have a strange affinity with ohio, cleveland to be exact. one of our first releases came from ethiopians , the work of marty brass. through marty we got put on to kristen ward, the brains behind que será será. i’d come across kristen before in the great band 'shiny penny', their favourite track of mine being 'lez luv'. however they did what all good bands do and split up, and i was bummed out.

but every cloud has a silver lining, or whatever the saying is.

we heard about her new incarnation, and it blew us away. i went weeks, maybe longer calling the track off of her myspace 'fear of performance'. adam only corrected me this morning, but that doesn't matter. what matters is how perfect this track is (and the others we've heard). it's been in my head since day one, and it has the strangest effect on me. it makes me wish i was a girl, not for all the reasons you'd expect (you know, the usual boob fondling and staring at myself naked in the mirror), but so i could be in a riot grrrl band, or do this kind of music with so much conviction.

calling que será será “riot grrrl” would be an easy way out, but it’s more than that. it’s pop music about all the usual stuff; love, bitterness and all the kind of stuff that moves you to write a song. they/she constantly tip their hat to the likes of sebadoh, polvo and the breeders. they pull off that whole late 80's/early 90's feel easily, without sounding hammy and contrived. i love it.

tl;dr que será será are a very, very, very good band. i'm a rubbish writer, possibly in love with the idea of myself as a woman, and i don't know the difference between columbus and cleveland.

we're putting out their tape out in the near future, but until then you can expect to hear 'fear of permanence' on the tye die sample tape coming out this month.
